Laura Engel

Laura Engel is Associate Professor of International Education and International Affairs, Director of the International Education Program, and co-chair of the GW UNESCO Chair in International Education for Development at The George Washington University, based in Washington, DC (US). As a policy sociologist working in the field of comparative and international education, Laura focuses on global education policy trends in federal systems, including the internationalization of education, education policy uses of international large-scale assessments, and global citizenship education. She is the author of four books and over 70 articles, book chapters, and policy briefs. Her latest book is The Machinery of School Internationalization in Action (Routledge, 2020). She is the recipient of the 2022 GW Morton A. Bender Teaching Award. Laura serves on the board of directors of the NEA Foundation, and is joint editor of the journal, International Studies in Sociology of Education. Dr. Engel earned her PhD in education policy from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
